Bearskin Fire Update -Monday, September 11, 2017

Bearskin Fire Information: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5536/
Boise National Forest Fire Information: 208-373-4105

Acres: 28,130 Acres Containment: 0 percent   Personnel: 115

Resources assigned: 3 crews, 2 helicopter, 8 engines, 3 water tenders, 1 NIMO Team

BOISE, Idaho - Fire activity on the east side of the Bearskin Fire remains quiet. There was some spotting to the south about a quarter mile outside the main perimeter and there has been some additional growth on the north end away from Deadwood Lodge and toward the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Smoke was seen from the interior of the fire to the north and will likely continue to be visible until a weather event like rain or snow ends the season.
Crews continue to make progress chipping and have completed prep work to the intersection of Forest roads 579 and 555. Chipping continues to the south down Forest road 555 and has reached the second bridge, while engines and heavy equipment moved east along Forest road 579 removing snags. Crews are now working on a third defensive firing operation near Ross Creek, to remove fuels ahead of the fire.
Plans for Monday include continuing the chipping, prep work, snag removal and patrolling. Several Management Action Points or MAPs have been established. MAPs are clearly specified conditions that could prompt the team to modify their existing fire management actions, or trigger the implementation of new strategies and/or tactics. “Incident conditions” can refer to fire activity, smoke, weather, fuels, calendar dates, resource availability or a combination of any of these elements.
MAPs have been established for the following: if the fire spreads into fire scars in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness; if the fire reaches Elk Creek; if the fire gets established in the 2016 Pioneer Fire or 2007 Sheep Trail Fire scars; if the fire spreads across the 510 road system; or if the fire spreads west of the 555 road. MAPs do not imply any specific action will be taken; they merely mark a point at which a different management decision will be considered.
Warm and dry conditions are expected Monday with light winds. Moisture is forecast to increase Tuesday bringing wetting rains. A cold front moves through the area Thursday evening.
The Bearskin Fire area closure remains in place for public safety and includes the Deadwood Reservoir area and all the campgrounds and trails in the vicinity. The NFS road 582 through Bear Valley remains open except between the junctions of NFS roads 545 and 515 which is closed for construction. Work is expected to last into October.

All Forest Closure Orders and maps are available at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/boise/alerts-noticeserts/boise/alerts-notices

Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect on public and private lands under fire protection of the Boise National Forest, Boise BLM and State of Idaho. For specific information visit: https://www.idahofires.com/p/fire-restrictions.html

BOISE, Idaho, September 10, 2017 - Crews continue chipping and cutting dead trees from the Deadwood Lodge south along NFS 579 and 555. In some locations the western edge of the fire is approximately one and a half miles from the roads. The long range strategy is to clear debris along the 579 and 555 corridor to deny fuel to the fire, creating defensive positions.

Crews began defensive firing late Friday evening starting between the Deadwood Lodge and Deadwood Outfitters. Defensive firing tactics create a fire in the opposite direction toward an approaching fire, clearing fuels ahead of its path. Crews brought the defensive fire line back down to the Reeves drainage and stayed with it overnight to monitor its behavior.

Sunday’s plan is to improve the contingency line from the NFS 579 and along NFS 555 south toward the reservoir while crews are evaluating and looking for more opportunities to engage in firing operations. Resource Advisory surveys are also starting to take place in the southwest area ahead of the fire. Resource Specialists survey areas to identify possible historic sites that might be threatened by an approaching fire. Locating these sites assist fire managers develop containment and suppression plans to protect these resources.

The fire area will be warm and dry through Monday. Surface winds will be from the east Sunday morning and shifting to the west in the afternoon. Wind gusts to 20 mph are possible Sunday afternoon.

Acres: 25,808 Acres Containment: 0 percent   Personnel: 129

Resources assigned: 4 crews, 1 helicopter, 9 engines, 2 water tenders, 1 NIMO Team

BOISE, Idaho, September 9, 2017 - Fire activity picked up on the north end of the fire on the ridgeline of Pilgrim Mountain overlooking the lodge at Deadwood Outfitters. The inversion broke early Friday afternoon creating a significant run in that area. The fire is closest to the NFS 579 road at Bernard Creek south of Deadwood Outfitters. Fire activity on the east side was quiet. The fire scar from the 2010 Little Beaver Complex is holding fire progress to the west side of Elk Creek.

Incident Commander Mike Quesinberry said crews have boxed the fire in on the west side and containment is curtailing its spread. As the fire burns south and east it will enter old burn scars that will eventually deprive the fire of fuel. Positions along the south side near Deadwood Reservoir are prepped for possible contingencies.

Fire crews are continuing making successful progress chipping in spite of losing one of two original chippers due to a mechanical breakdown. Two more chippers have been ordered to assist crews with chipping and thinning along NFS 579 and 555.

A Red flag warning is in effect until midnight for scattered lightning. Weather forecast in the fire area Saturday calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly in the afternoon, possibly producing gusts up to 50 mph and one-half inch of rainfall.

The Bearskin Fire area closure remains in place for public safety and includes the Deadwood Reservoir area and all the campgrounds and trails in the vicinity. The NFS road 582 through Bear Valley remains open except between the junctions of NFS roads 545 and 515 which is closed for construction (see paragraph below). The Closure Order and maps are available at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/boise/alerts-notices or at Forest Service Ranger Stations, and are posted on bulletin boards along roads into the Bear Valley area.

Bearskin Fire Update - Sept. 6th

BOISE, Idaho, September 6, 2017 - Yesterday the fire continued spreading to the west toward Deadwood drainage and the NFS 555 road. A smoke inversion remained in place for most of the day. Due to the inversion, the fire only grew a little. The inversion helped firefighters concentrate on improving the fire break along the NFS 555 and 579 roads.
Crews continued chipping felled trees north of Deadwood Reservoir along the NFS road 555 (Scout Mountain/Deadwood Road) and NFS road 579 (Landmark to Stanley Road). Snags along the corridor are being removed for public and firefighter safety. Felling the trees and chipping helps reduce the heavy fuel load and enhances the ability of the roads to act as fuels breaks.
A red flag warning is still in place and hot, dry and unstable weather continues in the fire area. Easterly winds are expected for Wednesday morning and will shift to the northwest in the afternoon. Fire Activity is expected to increase in the early afternoon when the inversion is expected to lift. Insect-killed dead and down lodgepole pine and subalpine fir remain between the fire and Deadwood Reservoir.
Today, firefighters will focus their efforts securing and snagging the NFS roads 563 and 579. Contingency lines will continue to be improved from the NFS road 579 and along the NFS road 555. Assessment of structures at the Bureau of Reclamation Deadwood Reservoir will continue. Fuels reduction work will continue around Deadwood Outfitters and crews will look for other opportunities to limit fire growth. .

Bearskin Fire Update - Sept. 4

Bearskin Fire Information: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5536/

Acres: 19,283 Acres Containment: 0 percent    Personnel: 105
Resources assigned: 4 crews, 1 helicopter, 4 engines, 2 water tenders, 1 NIMO Team

Bearskin Fire expected to move southwest toward Deadwood Reservoir
BOISE, Idaho, September 4, 2017 - With a red flag warning still in place, hot, dry and unstable weather continues to dominate our area. Winds out of the north-northeast are expected for Monday through Tuesday morning, which will move the Bearskin Fire to the south and southwest in the direction of Deadwood Reservoir.
Bearskin Fire grew to over 19,000 acres once the inversion created by heavy smoke lifted from the fire area late yesterday morning. An increase in fire activity is expected again today when the inversion lifts. Heavy fuels remain between the fire and Deadwood Reservoir, created by stands of insect-killed dead and down lodgepole pine and subalpine fir. There has also been limited spread into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the northeast side of the fire.
Crews continue to treat fuels north of Deadwood Reservoir along the NFS roads 555 (Scout Mountain/Deadwood Road) and 579 (Landmark to Stanley Road). A feller-buncher is being used to clip dead trees along the road corridor, then crews are bucking the felled trees and running them through a chipper. This reduces the heavy fuel load and enhances the capability of the roads to act as a fuel breaks. Incident Commander Mike Quesinberry says that the immediate goal of the firefighting efforts is to keep the fire on the east side of the Deadwood River drainage.
To protect public and firefighter safety, the Bearskin Fire area closure has been expanded to include the Deadwood Reservoir area and all the campgrounds in the vicinity. The NFS road 582 through Bear Valley remains open at this time. The Closure Order and maps are available at:https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/boise/alerts-notices or at Forest Service Ranger Stations, and posted on bulletin boards on roads into the Bear Valley area.

The Clear Creek Road (NFS Road 582 at MP 4.5) will also be closed from above the Long Creek Summer Homes north to the junction with the NFS Road 545/515 for six weeks beginning this evening for construction work. Forest visitors will need to plan their trips accordingly; maps are available at Lowman Ranger Station (208-259-3361) and on the Boise National Forest website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/boise/maps-pubs
As the hunting season gets underway coupled with extreme potential for fire growth, visitors are reminded that Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect on public and private lands under fire protection of the Boise National Forest, Boise BLM and State of Idaho. Under Stage 1 restrictions, campfires are only permitted in developed recreation sites with an agency provided structure. Smoking is allowed in a cleared area of at least 3 feet in diameter, in a vehicle or in a developed recreation site. Red flag warning in effect Sunday and Monday for Boise National Forest
BOISE, Idaho, September 3, 2017 - A red flag warning goes into effect this morning and will be in place through Monday evening. National fire preparedness remains at its highest level - Level 5. A red flag warning means that conditions are ideal for wildfire starts and rapid spread.
Bearskin Fire growth was moderated yesterday by a heavy smoke inversion. The fire is still mapped at 15,278 acres. As the inversion lifts, fire activity will increase with moderate rates of spread in the heavy fuels created by stands of dead and down lodgepole pine and subalpine fir.
Crews remain focused on reducing fuels around the Deadwood Outfitters and the Elk Creek Guard station. Bureau of Reclamation infrastructure at Deadwood Reservoir is being assessed for fire preparedness.
A strong ridge of high pressure over southwest Idaho and southeast Oregon brings continued hot, dry and unstable conditions through Tuesday. The Haines Index, used to predict potential for large fire growth is expected to be at level 6 (highest ranking) Sunday and Monday. Relative humidity will drop to single digits, and winds will be light. No showers or thunderstorms are expected until Thursday.
With extreme potential for fire growth, forest visitors are reminded that Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect on public and private lands under fire protection of the Boise National Forest, Boise BLM and State of Idaho. Under Stage 1 restrictions, campfires are only permitted in developed recreation sites with an agency provided structure. Smoking is allowed in a cleared area of at least 3 feet in diameter, in a vehicle or in a developed recreation site. For specific information visit: (www.idahofireinfo.com/p/fire-restrictions.html)

Public and firefighter safety primary in Bearskin Fire suppression efforts

BOISE, Idaho, September 2, 2017 - With hot and dry weather conditions, the Bearskin Fire continues to grow. The 15, 278 acre fire is burning about 4 miles northeast of Deadwood Reservoir. A National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) team is now in command of the fire.
The Bearskin Fire is actively burning in steep and rough terrain, making short crown runs, spreading upslope and spotting ahead of the fire. Slopes are covered with highly flammable stands of lodgepole pine and sub-alpine fire heavy with dead and down trees. The fire is surrounded by old burn scars, and firefighters hope to use those to their advantage in suppressing this fire.
To protect public and firefighter safety, the Bearskin Fire area closure has been expanded to include the Deadwood Reservoir area and all the campgrounds in the vicinity. The NFS Road 582 through Bear Valley remains open at this time. Maps of the closure area are available on the Boise National Forest website (https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/boise/alerts-notices), Forest Service Ranger Stations, and posted on bulletin boards on roads into the Bear Valley area.
Forest Service personnel are stationed at the primary road junctions to assist the public in understanding the closures and ensuring their safety. Any campers who had belongings moved from the closure area should contact the Lowman Ranger Station (208-259-3361).
With fire crews and other resources scarce, firefighters are concentrating on point protection for local infrastructure. Fuels reduction work is underway around the Deadwood Outfitters facilities, Bearskin and Idaho Power weather stations, Deer Flat campground and the Elk Creek Guard station. Fire preparedness is being assessed for Deadwood Reservoir facilities. Crews are improving contingency fire lines on the National Forest System Road 579 (Landmark to Stanley Road) and NFS Road 555 (Deadwood Road). Other Boise National Forest personnel are on hand to ensure that our fish, water and archeologic resources are also being protected.
As a hotter, drier weather pattern establishes over the west, temperatures will remain in the 90s. This will increase the chance of large fire growth, with a Haines Index level expected to rise to 6 by Sunday.
Nationally, the Fire Preparedness Level is still at PL5. About 1.5 million acres are burning across the U.S., with a wildfire year to date total of almost 7. 4 million acres. https://www.nifc.gov/nicc/sitreprt.pdf
The 10-acre Boulder Fire, burning 4 miles northeast of Idaho City, is expected to be fully contained today. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place. http://tfr.faa.gov/tfr_map_ims/html/ew/scale7/tile_14_18.html
